Abbey, Abbey Road, Bearwood B67 5RA - has recently re-opened following a well organised campaign by local stalwarts.
It was announced in January 2016 by the then owners, Stonegate, that the pub would close at the end of February (although it was closed unexpectedly mid-February). A petition was set up which achieved 2000+ supporters. Publicity was generated through the Express& Star, Radio WM and protests outside the pub. Information on getting the pub registered as an Asset of Community Value was obtained via CAMRA and the paperwork was completed by Julie Birley.
All this hard work paid off. Although the pub was initially sold to a developer, it was subsequently sold on and has been refurbished, with dining for curries/grill in addition to the bar, lounge and pool room. There are two handpumps in place and Real Ale may become a regular feature in the future.
Congratulations to all involved in the campaign. Long may the Abbey community survive.

The Rising Sun, 116, Horseley Road, Tipton DY4 7NH which was CAMRA National Pub of the Year in 1999, is once again a shining light. The pub, once a Mecca for Real Ale drinkers, has been through a very sticky patch over the last few years, and eventually closed. It was, however, rescued by the knight in shining armour known as Black Country Ales.
After extensive repair and refurbishment work, it reopened to the public on Thursday, 14th March.
The new managers are Malcolm and Julie Roberts. Malcolm is a local Tipton man and remembers the pub in its heyday. Julie also has good credentials - she works for Wye Valley Brewery.
The pub offers up to 8 Real Ales, including the Black Country range, and one real Cider (usually Black Rat). Cobs and snacks are available. It is open 12-12 every day, but don't leave it too late to arrive, because it will close earlier if there is no custom.
The outside area has been tidied up, and now forms an oasis of quiet, where you can sit and drink your beer. A dart board has reappeared in the bar, and acoustic music is planned for occasional evenings. They are also planning a beer festival in support of Macmillan nurses for June 20th to 23rd.
We visited on a day when only two of the three real fires were lit, but it was warm - as was the welcome and service. Why not give it a try yourself.
